Parliament votes by a clear majority for a stronger MFF

PRESS RELEASE
Strasbourg, 28th of April 2026
Today, during its plenary session, the European Parliament adopted by a clear majority its interim report on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034, setting out its position for upcoming negotiations with the Council.
Rasmus ANDRESEN, budget spokesperson for the Greens/EFA group, commented:
“We Greens support the Parliament’s position on the next long-term EU budget. It is both ambitious and realistic. If we truly want the EU to stand firm in the face of Trump and Putin, then we must strengthen it.
We need an EU budget that invests in regions, people, and climate action.
We strongly support the introduction of new own resources. A digital levy on large tech companies is essential. It would ensure fairness for small and medium-sized businesses and give the EU the financial room it needs.
This would allow the repayment of the COVID recovery loans to be fully financed without cutting key programmes such as health or Erasmus+.
It is now up to the heads of state and government, above all Chancellor Merz. So far, he has refused to engage in constructive solutions, and we are losing valuable time. We call on the German government to move away from its blocking stance.”
